Housing Quarters Left Abandoned for Years… Are Authorities Negligent?

Residents of Villapuram in Madurai have urged authorities to take immediate action regarding the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) residential quarters located behind the local Flower Market, which have remained in a dilapidated condition for several years. According to local residents, the abandoned buildings have deteriorated significantly due to the lack of maintenance and now pose a potential danger to public safety. Complaints have also been raised that the premises are allegedly being misused for anti-social activities during nighttime because of inadequate security and monitoring.

The housing complex is situated near the busy Villapuram Flower Market area and is frequented by residents, traders, and visitors. Locals claim that several structures within the complex have developed visible cracks and signs of structural weakness. The condition of the buildings has led to concerns that portions of the structures may collapse, particularly during adverse weather conditions, posing risks to people living nearby and those passing through the area.

Residents have requested the concerned departments to inspect the site and implement appropriate measures, including securing the premises, demolishing unsafe structures, or undertaking redevelopment works if necessary. They argue that continued inaction could result in safety hazards and law-and-order concerns in the locality.

Local resident P. Bharathkumar stated that the deteriorated buildings have become a source of fear for nearby residents and urged the authorities to conduct an immediate assessment and take preventive action to ensure public safety.
