Domestic airfares across key routes connecting Chennai with major cities in Tamil Nadu and neighboring Kerala have risen sharply ahead of school reopening and the end of the summer vacation season. According to airline booking data, ticket prices from Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Thoothukudi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi to Chennai have increased by three to four times compared to normal rates. Industry observers attribute the surge to a combination of high passenger demand, limited seat availability, weekend travel congestion and dynamic pricing mechanisms adopted by airlines.
Thousands of passengers planning to return to Chennai after spending the summer holidays in their hometowns have been affected by the sudden increase. Government employees, private sector workers, students and families are facing unexpected travel expenses at a time when railway tickets have already been sold out on many routes. As a result, travelers seeking last-minute transportation options are finding air travel significantly more expensive than usual.

Among the most affected routes, Madurai–Chennai fares have reached ₹17,303, while Thoothukudi–Chennai fares stand at ₹17,272. Coimbatore–Chennai tickets are currently priced at ₹16,504 and Tiruchirappalli–Chennai fares have climbed to ₹14,404. Routes from Kerala have also witnessed substantial increases, with fares from Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi rising well above their usual levels. Salem–Chennai remains one of the few sectors where fare increases have been relatively moderate.
Passengers have urged the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to closely monitor airfare trends and take appropriate measures to prevent excessive pricing during periods of exceptionally high travel demand.
