Madurai Traffic Diversions From September 16

Madurai’s traffic police have announced a 24-hour traffic diversion plan from 10 p.m. on September 16 to 10 p.m. on September 17 in view of the Meenakshi Amman Temple Kumbabishekam scheduled for September 17. The restrictions are aimed at managing the expected movement of large numbers of devotees and ensuring safe and smooth traffic flow around the temple during the major religious event.

Major Traffic Restrictions Around Meenakshi Temple

The traffic arrangements cover several important roads surrounding the Meenakshi Amman Temple. Vehicles will not be permitted on key stretches of Chithirai, Masi and Avani Moola streets during the specified period. The police have also advised motorists, particularly those travelling through central Madurai, to plan their journeys in advance and use the designated alternative routes.

Ambulances, fire service vehicles, emergency routes, designated ‘sterile zones’, continuous monitoring to ensure emergency vehicles can move without obstruction;

Madurai Railway Station, temple area, four temple towers, separate pedestrian routes, arrangements to help devotees reach the temple safely on foot;

Temporary parking facilities are being arranged at different locations to accommodate devotees arriving for the Kumbabishekam. Temporary bus terminals are also being planned at locations including C2 Outpost, Ellis Nagar, Anna Bus Stand and Teppakulam. These arrangements are intended to reduce the concentration of buses and private vehicles near the temple premises.

Separate diversion routes have been planned for government and private buses as well as two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Goods vehicles will face restrictions on entering the city during specified periods and will be directed to alternative routes. Emergency access is being given special attention, with roads used by ambulances and fire service vehicles to be monitored as ‘sterile zones’ to prevent obstruction.

Pedestrian routes have also been identified for devotees travelling from Madurai Railway Station towards the temple area, as well as for movement towards the four temple towers. Visitors are expected to follow police directions and use designated walking routes and parking facilities rather than stopping vehicles on restricted roads.

The Madurai traffic police have appealed to residents and devotees to cooperate fully with the traffic diversions and follow the instructions issued during the Kumbabishekam arrangements.
